Day 22: Monday to Washington

With the Blue Ridge Parkway still closed, and the Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park closed, we decided to head to Washington a day ahead of schedule. More beautiful houses in the morning, before hitting Washington early afternoon.

It doesn’t look snowy up there from here!

Once checked in to our hotel, which is in Arlington, just up the road from the Arlington National Cemetery, we headed out for a short walk to see the cemetery. I was expecting amazing, but Wow!

JFK

One of the locals.

We then thought a stroll to the Lincoln Memorial wouldn’t take too long. It didn’t. So far so good.

Then the fun began. Let’s walk back over the other bridge. This is where we learn two important lessons about walking in American cities.

  1. Just because there’s a walking path doesn’t mean it goes anywhere. But you need to walk for half an hour before it runs out in the middle of freewayville – totally surrounded by freeways with nowhere left to walk except back from where we came from.
  2. You cant cross freeways, and even if you could, there would be more freeways in your way.

Eventually we made our way to Foggy Bottom (who names these places), grabbed a bite to eat at Roti (Yum!) and caught the Metro back to Arlington.

Five hours after our ‘short’ walk started we returned. But what a five hours. Amazing city.

Glad you made it to the Nation’s Capital…..just like Canberra the roads/paths will confuse you. If you get a chance the Smithsonian is amazing plus the almighty Capitol Building under the rotunda is a sight to behold. If you do stand in a certain spot and whisper something to someone and the other group could be positioned in another spot and you’ll hear how the opposing party got the secrets 😲….also enjoy the TRUMP House 🇺🇸

Thank you very much for the phone call today.
A lovely long talk, but I forgot to thank Carol
for the most beautiful words in the card to Gail.
It brought tears to our eyes – so thank you
sincerely Carol. We love you all dearly.
    Take care and have fun.
