With the Blue Ridge Parkway still closed, and the Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park closed, we decided to head to Washington a day ahead of schedule. More beautiful houses in the morning, before hitting Washington early afternoon.
Once checked in to our hotel, which is in Arlington, just up the road from the Arlington National Cemetery, we headed out for a short walk to see the cemetery. I was expecting amazing, but Wow!
We then thought a stroll to the Lincoln Memorial wouldn’t take too long. It didn’t. So far so good.
Then the fun began. Let’s walk back over the other bridge. This is where we learn two important lessons about walking in American cities.
- Just because there’s a walking path doesn’t mean it goes anywhere. But you need to walk for half an hour before it runs out in the middle of freewayville – totally surrounded by freeways with nowhere left to walk except back from where we came from.
- You cant cross freeways, and even if you could, there would be more freeways in your way.
Eventually we made our way to Foggy Bottom (who names these places), grabbed a bite to eat at Roti (Yum!) and caught the Metro back to Arlington.
Five hours after our ‘short’ walk started we returned. But what a five hours. Amazing city.
